A failed sump pump during a Chicago storm is one of the most common ways a finished basement gets destroyed. The pit fills, the float never trips (or trips and nothing happens), and within twenty minutes you have an inch of water across the slab. The good news: a partial save is almost always possible if you move fast.
Step 1: Get any pump on the pit, right now
Do not wait for a plumber. Do not wait for the power company. Anything that moves water out of the pit faster than it comes in will buy you time. In order of what most Chicagoland homeowners actually have on hand:
- Wet/dry shop vac. A 12-gallon shop vac in "wet" mode (filter out, drain plug closed) will pull roughly 10–12 gallons every couple of minutes. Empty it into a utility sink, a toilet, or out the back door — not back into the pit.
- Portable utility pump. The $80 transfer pumps at any Chicago hardware store push 300–500 GPH through a garden hose. Drop it in the pit, run the hose to a floor drain on a higher floor or out a window onto the lawn (away from the foundation).
- Garden hose siphon. If the pit is higher than your yard's grade and you have no pump, you can start a siphon with a hose. Fill the hose with water, cap one end, drop the other in the pit, and release outside. Slow, but free, and it works.
- Bucket brigade. Honestly — two people with five-gallon buckets going up the stairs can outpace a slow infiltration rate. Don't be proud about it.
Step 2: Check the float switch before you assume the pump is dead
Probably half the "dead sump pump" calls we hear about are actually a stuck float. The float is the bobber that rises with the water and tells the pump to kick on. In a narrow pit, or one full of gravel and silt, the float can jam against the pit wall or against the discharge pipe and never trigger the switch.
Unplug the pump first. Then reach in (gloves on — sump water is not clean), lift the float by hand, and let it drop a few times. Plug the pump back in. If you hear it hum and water starts moving, you just saved yourself a service call. While you're in there, look for:
- A tripped GFCI on the outlet the pump is plugged into. Reset it.
- A tripped breaker in the panel. Same — reset and listen.
- An obvious obstruction wedged between the float and the pit wall.
- A discharge pipe that has frozen shut (common in February — the pump runs, but water has nowhere to go and trips the overload).
Step 3: Call for help if water is still rising
If you've done steps 1 and 2 and the water is still gaining on you, the inflow rate is bigger than what you can move. That's when you stop bailing and start calling. After the event: figure out why the pump failed
Once the water is down and the pit is empty, the diagnosis usually comes down to one of five things:
- Clogged impeller. Silt, pea gravel, or a stray kid's toy gets sucked into the volute and the pump motor spins without moving water. You'll hear it run but the level won't drop. Fix: pull the pump, flush the impeller.
- Stuck float. See above. Long-term fix is a vertical float or a tethered float in a wider pit.
- Dead motor. Most builder-grade 1/3 HP pumps last 7–10 years in Chicago basements. If yours is older than that and won't hum at all when plugged in, it's done.
- Tripped breaker or GFCI. Sometimes recurring — a pump on its way out will draw more amps and trip the breaker repeatedly before it dies for good.
- Short-cycling primary. If the pump is kicking on every 30 seconds even during dry weather, the check valve is bad or the pit is too small. Constant cycling burns out the motor in a fraction of its rated life.
Long-term prevention: redundancy is the whole game
A single sump pump on a single 120V circuit is one ComEd outage away from a flooded basement. If your finished basement is worth more than a few hundred dollars to you, you want layered backup:
- Battery-backup sump pump. A second pump in the same pit, wired to a deep-cycle marine battery. Kicks in when the primary fails or the power goes out. Good for 6–8 hours of intermittent pumping on a fresh battery. Expect to replace the battery every 4–5 years.
- Water-powered backup sump. The unsung hero. Uses municipal water pressure to drive an ejector that pulls water out of the pit. No electricity, no battery, runs as long as the city water is on. Trade-off: it uses about 1 gallon of city water to move 2 gallons of pit water, so it's not free to run — but during a multi-day outage it's the only thing that keeps going. Common in Naperville, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn finished basements.
- Backflow check valve / overhead sewer. Separate problem from a sump failure, but if you're in a combined-sewer neighborhood (most of Chicago proper, plus older inner-ring suburbs in the MWRD service area), a sewer backflow valve protects you against the other major basement flood vector.
- Smart sump alarm with WiFi alerts. Float-based or pressure-based sensors that text you when the water level in the pit gets above a threshold. $40–$150. The cheapest insurance you'll ever buy — half the failures we hear about would have been catches if someone had known about it 30 minutes sooner.
Chicagoland-specific notes
Where you live changes the failure mode. A sump-dependent finished basement in Naperville, Wheaton, or Plainfield — built on heavy clay, often with a high water table after a wet spring — sees the pump cycling year-round. The motor wears out faster, and a single failure during a thunderstorm fills the pit in minutes. For these homes, a water-powered backup is almost mandatory.
In the city of Chicago proper, and in older inner-ring suburbs like Oak Park, Berwyn, Cicero, and Evanston, the pump matters less because many of these homes drain to a combined sewer rather than a sump. The bigger risk there is sewer backup during heavy rain — a different problem requiring a backflow valve or an overhead sewer conversion, not a better pump. Know which type of basement you have before you spend money on the wrong backup.
